Built c1860 as a carriage barn, in 1992 the building was moved approximately 500 feet down Baker Street to its present location adjacent to the c1870 Narragansett Fire Barn, now the Town of Warren's Firemen's Museum, and located in the heart of Warren's Historic District. The building is in the process of being restored to its original use as a c1860 carriage barn which will reflect the restoration of its original sliding front doors and interior horse stalls, grain bins and water trough as well as other exterior and interior renovations according to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The carriage barn is used as an armory by the c1798 Federal Blues militia company and as a museum dedicated to the preservation of Warren's historic military artifacts. Of significant importance will be the permanent display of two 1760 French Strasbourg cannon that were given to the State of Rhode Island by the General Sullivan of the Continental Army for their use in the 1778 Battle of Rhode Island (fought in nearby Portsmouth). The cannon were also used in the defense of the State during the War of 1812. The two cannon were given to the Warren Artillery Company by the State for their participation in the 1842 Dorr Rebellion and subsequently given to the Town of Warren. The cannon, stolen and severely vandalized in 1981 and returned to the Town in 1994, are in the process of restoration. The carriages on which the cannon are mounted are also being restored and are very early and rare examples of a single trail carriage and are precursors to the type used in the Civil War as are their rare attached limbers (ammunition carriers).
